Cognitive function
Cognitive function is a very popular topic of discussion. All of us strive to maintain our focus and memory, our ability to rationalize clearly and concisely, and our ability to complete tasks which require higher level learning.
Areas which may impact cognitive function
- Sleep
- Stress
- Food and nutrients
- Aging
- Seasonal fluctuation (including hot and cold weather)
- Mood related issues
- Exercise
- Hydration
…and this is just to name a few!
Distractions surround us at every corner...
- Phones
- Computers
- Noise from retail outlets
- Traffic
- Busy streets with lots of vehicles
- Busy restaurants
- Anywhere the decibel level is just too high
Too much of these stressors can be quite overwhelming!
Helping Ourselves
Spending 30 minutes to an hour a day on exercise:
- Relieves stress
- Improves blood flow (especially to the brain)
- May stimulate brain cell growth (neurogenesis) naturally at any age (as long as you are able)
Tasks, chores, procedures, all of which require higher level learning, such as:
- Playing chess
- Doing a puzzle
- Solving problems
- Mathematics
- Making good sense of a book
We are required to think about these things using our cognitive abilities. This mental challenge helps to stimulate neurogenesis naturally!
Constructive and positive socialization is very important:
- Talking with a friend or family member
- Getting involved with a group of people where you are interacting or participating and listening, as well as educating or explaining things which require deeper thought processes
These activities also stimulate neuronal growth!
Nutrition
Make an effort to eat a healthy selection of foods including:
- Lean meats
- Healthy fats (such as avocado or olive oil)
- Vegetables dense in nutrients
- Fruits rich in antioxidants
If you are vegan or vegetarian, or do not have certain foods which may be very beneficial for cognitive function:
- Are you mixing together the vegetable-based proteins (such as beans and lentils) necessary for proper nutrition?
- Are you taking in enough fruit rich in antioxidants to support cognitive function?
